Ivan LUDLOW, Baritone

Born in London, Ivan Ludlow attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio. A regular guest at some of Europe’s most prestigious opera venues, including Brussels, Salzburg Festival, Naples, Spoleto, Paris, Lyon, Athens, Toulouse, Welsh National Opera, Strasbourg, Marseille, Bordeaux, Metz, Casa da Musica (Porto), Vlaamse Oper (Antwerp), Lausanne, with conductors such as Christophe Rousset, Adam Fischer, Jan Latham Koenig, Jean-Yves Ossonce, Cyril Diedrich, Franck Ollu, Christoph Ullrich Meyer, Ludovic Morlot, Gerard Korsten and Gustav Kuhn. He worked together with stage directors such as Macha Makaïeff, Olivier Py, Alvis Hermanis, Peter Sellars, Krzysztof Warlikowski ...

Roles he has amongst others sung are : Don Giovanni, Guglielmo, Onegin, Iarba (La Didone), Escamillo, Nevers (Les Huguenots), the Count (Capriccio), Marcello, Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress), Danilo, Belcore, Aeneas, Demetrius, Traveller (Curlew River), Astrologer (Burning Fiery Furnace), Baritone (Maxwell-Davies’ No. 11 Bus) and Le Mari (Les Mamelles de Tirésias).

Amongst his recent and future engagements :

October 2017 he participated in Purcell's "King Arthur" at Barbican Hall (semi-staged production) with The Academy of Ancient Music. Forthcoming performances include the world premiere of “Lunea” by Heinz Holliger at Zurich Opera, “From The House of the Dead” at La Monnaie and the Opera House of Lyon and “Lulu” at the Hamburg Staatsoper as well as recitals in Bulgaria, Belgium, France and England.

Ivan is particularly interested in new music and new artistic forms. He has recently performed the world premiere of pieces by Francesco Fillidei, Isidora Zebeljan and David Matthews as well as taking part in performances of music by Heinz Holliger, Wolfgang Rihm, Harrison Birtwistle and Peter Maxwell-Davies. He sang the role of Wotan/Wanderer in the Graham Vick/Jonathan Dove adaptation of Wagner’s Ring in several European festivals. He has performed both “Giovanni” and “Vixen” Silent Opera’s adapted versions of the classical works by Mozart and Janacek at the Beijing Music Festival, London Vaults and Helsinki Festival. His Brussels based company Room7 looks for innovative ways to perform both contemporary and classical opera and music theatre.

As an singer-actor he has toured throughout France in a Macha Makeïeff production of Trissotin/Les Femmes Savantes by Molière.

Ivan Ludlow has recorded for Hyperion (complete Poulenc Songs with Graham Johnson), son image (Fauré and Schumann discs with LBE), Dutton (Bridge songs with LBE) and LAWO classics (Henrik Hellstenius’ Ophelia: death by water singing). DVDs include La Veuve Joyeuse from Opéra de Lyon and Lulu from La Monnaie.

Né à Londres Ivan Ludlow complète ses études supérieures au Guildhall School of Musicand Drama et au National Opera Studio.  Depuis, il a travaillé sur des grandes scènes européennes: Opéra Comique, La Monnaie,  Salzbourg, Lyon, Lucerne, Moscou, Strasbourg, Naples, Glyndebourne, Hanovre, Toulouse, Marseille, Anvers, Porto, Athènes, Spoleto, Amsterdam…

Il travaille avec des chefs tels A. Fischer, L. Morlot, C. Rousset, R. Alessandrini, J-Y. Ossonce, P. Petrovic et G. Kuhn et des metteurs en scène tels M. Makaïeff, O. Py, A. Hermanis, P. Sellars, K. Warlikowski…

Ivan a chanté en récital dans plusieurs villes européennes et aux Etats-Unis. Il est aussi très actif dans le répertoire de concert avec des formations comme Seattle Symphony, BBC Symphony, Auckland Philharmonia, Les Talens Lyriques, Divino Sospiro, Ensemble Modern, Remix Ensemble…

Souvent associé à des créations et au repertoire de nos jours il a récemment chanté un nouvel opera d’ Isidora Zebeljan et enregistré “Ophelia” de Henrik Hellstenius en Norvège. Parmi ses projets un nouvel opera de Francesco Fillidei “Giordano Bruno”.

Sa discographie inclut des disques de mélodies de Schumann, Fauré, Poulenc et Bridge avec les grands pianistes Graham Johnson et Daniel Tong. En DVD “Les Mamelles de Tiresias” et “La Veuve Joyeuse” de l’Opera de Lyon ainsi que “Lulu” enregistré à La  Monnaie.
