Virpi Räisänen, one of the most sought after Finnish female singing talents at the moment, has garnered an impressive list of honours and achievements both as a mezzo soprano and earlier as a concert violinist. Next to her successful violin career singing was always her other passion. After finishing her singing diploma with the highest distinction she has launched a blooming singing career as well.
Now her warm mezzo voice and her strong musicality is leading her from one success to another. Besides mastering the traditional mezzo soprano repertoire, she has also established herself as a champion of contemporary music having world premiered dozens of new works, most of them written and dedicated to her.
Her career received a beautiful beginning with an invitation to 2009 Salzburger Festspiele where Virpi sang under the baton of Ingo Metzmacher one of the leading roles in Luigi Nono's opera Al gran sole carico d'amore (directed by Katie Mitchell). During 2009 she was also seen in the leading role of Elmira in Händel's seldomly performed opera Floridante at The International Händel Festspiele in Halle (directed by another renowned director Vincent Boussard). 2010 brought her a re-invitation to the Salzburg Festspiele for a role in Wolfgang Rihm's new opera Dionysos, directed by Pierre Audi which was revived in Amsterdam DNO and at the Staatsoper Berlin. A house she took meanwhile part in Le Vin Herbé (Fr. Martin) as Iseut aux blanches mains (also directed by Katie Mitchell).
Most recent engagements (2015) included participation in Lulu (Alban Berg) directed by William Kendrigde and in Dialogues des Carmélites (directed by Robert Carsen) both at the Opera House of Amsterdam.
A busy recital shedule followed next to her opera and concert engagements and recently she has given recitals in Amsterdam, Helsinki, Tokyo, Riga and Turku Music Festivals and appeared as a soloist of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra in Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Ligeti Requiem as a soloist of Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France with Esa-Pekka Salonen, soloist of Helsinki Philharmonic with John Storgårds and Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra with Sakari Oramo and Hannu Lintu just to mention some of the latest highlights of her fast started out career.
