Season 2018/2019 Julie Martin du Theil made her highly acclaimed debut at La Scala, stepping in at very short notice to the widely publicized season Premiere in Mozart’s Finta giardiniera, singing the lead role of Sandrina. This event was broadcast live simultaneously on TV and radio. The more we saw Julie Martin du Theil making her debut in the role of Norina in Don Pasquale, Musetta in La Bohème, and reviving her much loved role of Pamina in Die Zauberflöte at Theater Magdeburg. Her season continued as she made a company debut with the Welsh National Opera as Oscar in Un ballo in maschera, and returned to Opéra de Lausanne to sing Najade in Ariadne auf Naxos.

The current season 2019/2020 sees Martin du Theil return to La Scala, both in Milan as Oscar in Un ballo in maschera under the baton of Zubin Metha and on tour as Sandrina in La finta giardiniera when the company takes its much loved production to Shanghai, China. She subsequently reprises this role in concert in Switzerland with Lugano Musica under the baton of Diego Fasolis.

Swiss-French born soprano, Martin du Theil’s most recent performances include Zerlina at Opéra de Lausanne and Despina at the Deutsche Oper in Così fan tutte, under the baton of Donald Runnicles. She also sang the soprano solo in Mahler’s 4th symphony, conducted by Kimbo Ishii.

Julie Martin du Theil is since 2010 a member of the opera ensemble at Theater Magdeburg, where she has built up a broad repertoire including Sandrina in La Finta giardiniera, Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, Gretel in nsel und Gretel, Oscar in Un ballo in maschera, Pamina in Die ZauberÀöte, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, Despina in Così fan tutte, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Tytania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Anna Reich and Frau Fluth in Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Gabrielle in La Vie Parisienne, Olympia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Blondchen in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Valencienne in Die lustige Witwe, Sophie in Werther, Laura in Der Bettelstudent, Annina in Eine Nacht in Venedig, Frasquita in Carmen, Ännchen in Der Freischütz, Clorinda in La Cenerentola, Flora in The Turn of the Screw, Kristin in Boesmans’ Julie, Bemira in Telemann’s Miriways, Maria in West Side Story and Baroness Freimann in Der Wildschütz, a role which she also covered at the Semperoper Dresden.

2015/2016 she performed Fraulein Bürstner and Leni in the German premiere of Philip Glass’ The Trial at Theater Magdeburg, a co-production with the Music Theatre Wales and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and also premiered the role of Hagar in Sidney Corbett’s new opera Die Andere to great acclaim. Julie Martin du Theil made her stage debut as Elena in Nino Rota’s Il Capello di paglia di Firenze in Geneva. Soon after she sang Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro in Moutier and Neuchâtel as well as Johanna in Alain Perroux’s French production of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd at the Geneva Opéra de Poche.

In concert she sang the title role in La Suzanna by Stradella and in Arthur Honegger’s Le Roi David and toured Switzerland with Bach’s Weihnachtsoratorium. She played the leading role Emilienne in Noces in 2009/2010, a production of the French Filmmaker Philippe Béziat, inspired by Stravinsky’s Les Noces. She performed Papagena in Die Zauberflöte as well as La Princesse and La Chauve-Souris in L’Enfant et les sortilèges at Opéra de Lausanne in 2010.

Born in Geneva, Switzerland, Julie Martin du Theil began her studies at the Lausanne Music Conservatory graduating with pedagogic and concert diplomas. She continued her studies at the Hochschule für Musik and Theater in Munich, where she obtained a soloist diploma in 2010.
